In early 2026, tech giant Microsoft made a decision that drew widespread industry attention: promoting the AI coding tool Claude Code on a large scale internally. What makes this move particularly noteworthy is that Claude Code is developed by Anthropic, while Microsoft itself is not only the largest investor in Anthropic’s competitor, OpenAI, but also owns the market-leading AI programming product, GitHub Copilot.
Microsoft’s Strategic Shift
According to media reports on January 22, 2026, Microsoft has encouraged employees in several core divisions, including Windows, Microsoft 365, and Teams, to install and use Claude Code. The users are not limited to developers but also include designers and project managers. Microsoft’s Business and Industry Copilot team was even approved to use both Claude Code and GitHub Copilot simultaneously across all its repositories and to submit comparative feedback.
This decision did not come out of the blue. As early as June 2025, Julia Liuson, head of Microsoft’s developer division, pointed out in an internal email that, based on internal benchmark tests, Claude Sonnet 4 was the most recommended model for GitHub Copilot. Furthermore, Microsoft’s collaboration with Anthropic expanded in November 2025, when the Azure cloud platform began offering Claude models to its customers. By January 7, 2026, Claude models had become the default for Microsoft 365 Copilot.
Positive Industry Reception
Claude Code’s capabilities have gained more than just internal recognition at Microsoft. On January 2, 2026, Jaana Dogan, head of Google’s Gemini API and a principal engineer, publicly stated that Claude Code generated a system prototype in an hour with a design quality that exceeded her team’s expectations. Similar work had previously taken her team nearly a year. Google CEO Sundar Pichai also stated during an earnings call in April 2025 that over 30% of the company’s new code is written by AI.
