Notion has announced a major upgrade to its AI capabilities with the official launch of Custom Agents, which are autonomous agents. This feature enables users to create AI agents that run independently, handling repetitive team tasks 24/7 without the need for continuous manual prompting. This update significantly enhances Notion’s performance in task automation and knowledge management, helping to improve team collaboration efficiency.
Core Features of Autonomous Agents
Custom Agents operate completely autonomously. Users simply describe their work needs in natural language, set trigger conditions or schedules, and the agent will automatically execute tasks. The agents can access both internal Notion data and external tools, integrating with Slack, email, calendar, Figma, Linear, and custom services. Unlike traditional AI tools, Custom Agents do not require manual intervention for every step and can independently complete multi-step workflows.
Applications in Knowledge Management and Task Automation
In knowledge management, Q&A agents can autonomously answer recurring inquiries for departments like sales, support, IT, and HR based on the existing knowledge base, and update information sources in real-time. Task routing agents can capture incoming requests, create tasks, and assign owners, achieving end-to-end automation. Status update agents can automatically compile daily stand-ups, weekly reports, or monthly OKR reports. An early user case study shows that the company Remote’s IT support agent saves 20 hours per week and processes tickets with over 95% accuracy.
Integration Capabilities and Team Collaboration
Custom Agents support end-to-end workflows across multiple tools. They can monitor channels, route tasks, and keep Slack and Notion in sync. Users can easily share agents with their entire workspace, setting permissions as if managing real team members. Internally, Notion already has 2,800 agents running around the clock, and early testers have created over 21,000 agents for various scenarios, from achieving inbox zero to organizing projects.
Enterprise-Grade Control and Availability
This feature offers enterprise-grade security controls, including permission management, version control, usage analytics, and run logs, with all changes being reversible. Data is not used for AI training, and the enterprise version achieves zero data retention. Custom Agents are currently available in Business and Enterprise plans. The feature is free during the public beta period until May 3, 2026, after which it will adopt a pay-as-you-go model based on Notion Credits, with no change to the per-seat price.
