Google recently announced an update to its Chrome browser, further deepening the integration with Gemini AI and introducing several agent-style features to enhance the browser’s capabilities in autonomous task execution. This update is intended to address competition from AI browsers like Perplexity and Opera.
Following the update, the Gemini assistant transitions from a floating window to a persistent sidebar, allowing users to make inquiries directly related to the current webpage or multiple tabs.
Gemini Sidebar and Context Management
The new Gemini sidebar supports treating multiple tabs opened from the same source as a context group, making it easier for users to complete tasks such as product comparisons or price inquiries. At the same time, the Nano Banana feature allows users to modify an existing image using another image or product during the browsing process. This sidebar functionality begins rolling out to users today and is expanding to Chromebook Plus devices.
Personal Intelligence Integration
Chrome will integrate Google’s newly launched personal intelligence features, allowing users to authorize Gemini to access account data from Gmail, Google Search, YouTube, and Google Photos. For example, users can directly inquire about family schedules or draft and send emails without switching applications. This feature is expected to be rolled out in the coming months.
Auto-browse Agent Functionality
The most anticipated update is the Auto-browse agent functionality, which is based on the Gemini 3 model. It can autonomously navigate webpages and execute multi-step tasks, including finding discount coupons, purchasing products, booking services, filling out online forms, collecting tax documents, obtaining service quotes, and submitting expense reports. For sensitive operations such as logging in or making payments, the system will request user confirmation and use Chrome’s password manager or saved payment information to complete the operation without exposing the relevant data to the AI model.
Feature Rollout and Availability
The Gemini sidebar and Nano Banana features are beginning to roll out gradually starting today. The personal intelligence integration will go live in the coming months. The Auto-browse feature will first be available to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States. Through these updates, Google is further strengthening Chrome’s intelligent assistant capabilities in daily office and browsing scenarios.
